It’s January 2nd of the New Year. Yesterday while I was out for a bike ride and was delighted to see the streets and beaches full of people walking, running, blading and biking everywhere. It put a smile on my face to see people being active and taking the first steps to they’re 2014 New Year resolutions. Now, most of us know that by the end of January these resolutions start going go out the window. But why? Well I created 8 simple guidelines to getting your resolutions to stick for the long haul.
.) Have SMART goals: Be as specific as possible when choosing your resolutions. Make sure that they’re attainable and something your really want. Now write this down and put it somewhere you can read EVERYDAY.
.) Plan and prepare to succeed: Create a daily/weekly/monthly plan for yourself and tackle one goal at a time.
.) If you mess up just realize you’re only human and keep on going: The worst thing you can do is to beat yourself up for not being 100% spot on. You’ve set these goals for a reason. It’s not going to be easy. In order to achieve these new goals, you’re going to need to grow. And growth takes time, so be patient with yourself and stay focused.
.) Have support buddies: whether it be close family or friends tell people what your goals are so they can help hold your accountable.
.) Little steps to change will add up: it’s unrealistic to make big changes over night so cut yourself some slack and everyday try to do one small thing that will get you closer to your goal. These small things will add up fast!
.) Track your progress: It’s so important to find some way to track your progress. If no one is keeping score it is easy to lose sight of your goals. So find a fun way to track yourself.
.) Change your actions today: In order to reach your goals, you have to start acting like you’ve already reached them. If you begin to feel furstrated or get down on yourself something simple I do is ask myself, “What am I committed too?” This will bring to mind my goals of what I want to achieve and I will snap out of whatever I’m going through and continue towards what is really important to me. Don’t let distractions keep you from what you want. Keep all of your commitments to yourself in the forefront of your mind and move towards those commitments.
.) Reward yourself MORE : Treat yourself more whether it be a spa day or to go see your favorite band playing. It’s important to acknowledge the progress you’ve made and inspire yourself to stay on track.
There you have it, 8 ways to make your New Years Resolution STICK! Hope everyone tries this and is able to have success from it. 2014 has all the opportunity in the world for us to get where we want to go. This is your life, make it great! Do the leg work and create the life of your dreams. You deserve it!
